University of Texas System Chancellor William McRaven Speaks at Austin Charity Event

Tonight, a very special event took place for the Austin, Texas community. Breakthrough Austin held their 3rd annual Beat The Odds Benefit which featured a keynote speech from University of Texas System Chancellor William McRaven.
The charity dinner took place from 6-8:30 p.m. at the UT Alumni Center. Beat the Odds benefits first generation college graduates by providing scholarship money and other services.
McRaven was able to talk about the importance of global education. Several students who have benefited from the Breakthrough program were also able to share their stories.
McRaven became chancellor of the UT System last year after a distinguished military career. He now oversees 14 different institutions that educate 217,000 students.
Before entering the world of academia, McRaven was commander of the U.S. Special Operations Command. In the role, he led a force of 69,000 people and was in charge of counter-terrorism operations across the globe.
McRaven has advised presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama on defense issues. He spent a total of 37 years in the Navy.
