Last month, transgender activist Raquel Willis lent her voice to an important event. She was the keynote speaker at the Transgender Day of Remembrance.
The event was held at the SF LGBT Center in San Francisco, California. The 90-minute program featured Willis and a video tribute to the trans people that died in the past year.
Willis talked about the killing of transgender people in the United States and internationally. Transgender Day of Remembrance started in San Francisco in the late 1990s and it is currently observed in over 300 events around the world.
Willis serves as a national advocate for the Transgender Law Center. She particularly works towards fighting for the rights of transgender women of color.
Willis also works with the national Black women's writing collective, Echoing Ida. She has a background in journalism and originally started her career as a news reporter.
Willis helped to end police profiling of transgender women of color for her work with the Solutions Not Punishments Coalition. She has been named to the Woke 100 Women and The Root 100 lists.
