The Posse Foundation president Deborah Bial has dedicated her career to improving education. That made her an ideal choice to serve as keynote speaker at "The Enduring Legacy of Charles Hamilton Houston: 3rd Biennial Symposium."
The event is held to explore the legacy of Hamilton, a noted activist. This year's proceedings were held at Harvard Law School under the title, "Building Bridges to the Future: Education as a Path to Social Mobility."
The symposium was co-hosted by Harvard's Charles Hamilton Houston Institute for Race and Justice and Clemson University's Charles H. Houston Center for the Study of the Black Experience in Education. In addition to Bial, several other speakers also addressed the crowd.
Bial is an educational strategist who founded The Posse Foundation in 1989. The organization groups together promising students from underprivileged, urban environments in an effort to prepare them for college.
Bial is also a founding partner in the consultancy, Firefly Education LLC. She was named a MacArthur Fellow in 2007.
Bial is the recipient of honorary degrees from Hamilton College, Colby College and Hobart and William Smith Colleges. She holds a master's and Ed.D. degree from Harvard.
