Syracuse University Names Media Mogul Donald Newhouse Commencement Speaker

Donald Newhouse is a name that looms large in the Syracuse community.  On May 15th, he serves as commencement speaker for Syracuse University and SUNY College of Environmental Science and Foresty.

The ceremony will be held at the Carrier Dome beginning at 9:30 a.m.  In addition to speaking, Newhouse will also receive an honorary doctor of letters.  

He originally graduated from SU in 1951 and his father's name is on the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communication.  Tickets are not needed to hear Newhouse speak and watch commencement.  

Newhouse is the president of Advance Publications, a media company that has vast holdings in publishing and cable companies.  He co-owns the company with his brother Samuel as well. 

Newhouse particularly has observed Advance's newspaper business over the years.  They boast titles in over 25 cities and towns in America, including The Syracuse Post-Standard.  

Some of their other key properties include the Conde Nast magazine subsidiary and Bright House Networks.  Newhouse was born in New York City where he still lives today.
