Sports Sociologist Harry Edwards Named San Jose State Commencement Speaker

Sports sociologist and civil rights activist Harry Edwards started to build his legacy right on the San Jose State campus. Edwards will talk about his time paving a way to activism and the personal success that followed with graduates at his alma mater.
He is the 2016 commencement speaker. The ceremony will take place May 28th on campus at Spartan Football Stadium.
In addition to speaking, Edwards will also receive a Doctorate of Humane Letters. Around 9,000 graduates will get degrees in front of approximately 15,000 family members and friends.
Edwards was a key organizer behind the Olympic Project for Human Rights and the 1968 Black Power salutes by U.S. athletes on the podium at the Mexico City Games. Since, he has devoted his life to examining and teaching about racial issues particularly in the realm of sports.
In 1970, Edwards launched a three-decade long career in academia at the University of California. Concurrently, he advised professional sports organizations like the San Francisco 49ers and Golden State Warriors.
Edwards has authored four books that deal with race, sport, and society. He originally graduated from SJSU with a bachelor's degree in sociology in 1964 and went on to receive his master's and doctorate degrees in the discipline at Cornell University.
