Last Friday, the United Nations enlisted an expert to keynote their observance of World Autism Awareness Day. The UN welcomed science writer Steve Silberman to their New York City headquarters to speak.
Silberman addressed attendees at 10:00 in the Trusteeship Council Chamber. Following, there was a day-long series of panels and other discussions focused on Sustainable Development Goals related to autism.
The overarching theme of the conference was "Autism and the 2030 Agenda: Inclusion and Neurodiversity". Silberman was definitely able to push the agenda forward and help member nations understand how to address things going forward.
Silberman is the author of "NeuroTribes: The Legacy of Autism and the Future of Neurodiversity". The New York Times bestseller addresses the secret history of autism and why there has been a recent spike in diagnoses.
NeuroTribes also became the first science book to win the Samuel Johnson Prize for Non-Fiction. Silberman is also known for his writing in publications like Wired magazine.
In 2010, he won the AAAS Kavli Science Journalism Award for Magazine Writing. The following year, Time named his Twitter account one of the best to follow.
