Three years after his lengthy tenure as Minneapolis mayor ended, R.T. Rybak remains a popular figure in his home state. The University of Minnesota Morris has named Rybak commencement speaker this spring.
He will address the Class of 2016 on Saturday, May 14th beginning at 1:30 p.m. The ceremony will be held on the campus mall.
It is the 53rd commencement for Minnesota Morris. In addition to those at the ceremony, there will be an overflow crowd and live internet stream.
Rybak was mayor of Minneapolis from 2002-2013. He set into motion many of the initiatives that have led to the city becoming one of the fastest growing metropolises in the U.S.
A constant innovator, Rybak was the first mayor to use Twitter and the first to endorse then Illinois Senator Barack Obama for President in 2007. In 2008, he was a finalist for the World Mayor award.
Rybak is currently the executive director of Generation Next, a group of leaders working towards closing racial academic achievement gaps in Minneapolis and St. Paul. His memoir, "Pothole Confidential: My Life as Mayor of Minneapolis", will be released in April.
