One of the most respected print journalists today has been named commencement speaker at Susquehanna University. New York Times reporter and acclaimed author Kim Barker will speak to the Class of 2016 on May 15th.
The ceremony is being held at 2:30 p.m. in the James W. Garrett Sports Complex field house. There will be around 490 students who get their degrees this spring.
In addition to speaking, Barker will also be presented an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters. She can provide tips from her successful career in journalism that the graduates can hopefully apply to their own professional pursuits.
Barker joined the New York Times in 2014 and currently serves as the paper's Metro Reporter. She previously worked as an investigative reporter at ProPublica, tackling the area of campaign finance.
From 2004-2009, Barker was South Asia bureau chief for The Chicago Tribune. It was from her experience there that she was able to pen her popular book, "The Taliban Shuffle: Strange Days in Afghanistan and Pakistan".
Most recently, her book was adapted to film. "Whiskey Tango Foxtrot" was released last month with Tina Fey starring as Baker.
