Melissa Harris-Perry is an influential opinion leader and accomplished scholar.  Her valuable experience in and out of the media should serve the graduating students at Winston-Salem State University well this May.

Harris-Perry is the school's commencement speaker on May 13th at 9:45 a.m.  The ceremony will be held at Bowman Gray Stadium.

As a resident of Winston-Salem, Harris-Perry's presentation should have even a greater impact.  She originally graduated from nearby Wake Forest University with a bachelor's degree in English before getting her doctorate in political science from Duke University.

Harris-Perry currently is a political science professor at Wake Forest.  She has also been on the faculty at the University of Chicago, Princeton University and Tulane University.

Harris-Perry is perhaps best known for hosting her own weekend morning opinion show on MSNBC from 2012 till February of this year.  Sh is also the accomplished author of several books, including "Barbershops, Bibles, and BET: Everday Talk".

In addition, Harris-Perry currently serves as executive director of the Pro Humanitate Institute.  She is the founding director of the Anna Julia Cooper Center on Gender, Race, and Politics in the South.
