Polar Explorer Robert Swan Speaks at EBase Dedication
Jul 01 2016
Carson Ingle
One of the pioneers of EBase development spoke at the dedication of the first structure of its kind in North America at the end of June. Polar explorer Robert Swan was on hand on June 24th to see the EBase open at Apple Ridge Farm in Copper Hill, Virginia.
The EBase is a fully sustainable classroom. This particular one was built out of a 99-year old refurbished railroad car.
The Roanoke Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society donated the rail car. Four years and $100,000 was invested to turn it into a working classroom.
Swan is a noted explorer who is best known for his polar expeditions. He is the first man to walk unsupported to the North and South Poles.
Swan's company, 2041, works towards the preservation of the Antarctic. He co-authored the book, "Antarctica 2041: My Quest to Save Earth's Last Wilderness", to chronicle his efforts.
In 1995, Swan was awarded the Order of the British Empire. He is a UN Goodwill Ambassador for Youth, a visiting professor at Leeds University and a Special Envoy to UNESCO's Director General.
