The University of Idaho welcomed one of the foremost speakers on Native American issues to campus on Wednesday. Gyasi Ross spoke for a special event tied to Native American Heritage Month.

Ross told several personal stories about persecution against Native American people. He spoke about how his family challenged some of the ways they were treated by the government.

Most of his anecdotes however focused on what is currently happening in the world today. That includes expansion of the Keystone Pipeline into Native American lands and the protesting that has been associated with it.

Ross has written two books that educate people about Native American life. He is a frequent contributor to publications like The Huffington Post, Gawker and Indian Country Today.

Last year, Ross got his message out in a new way, releasing the spoken word album, "Isskootsik." He has shared his views on many controversial topics, such as the Washington Redskins name controversy, on media outlets across the country.

Ross is a graduate of Columbia Law School. He currently resides on the Port Madison Indian Reservation outside Seattle, Washington.
