At the end of last month, the graduates at Vassar College got the privilege of hearing from one of the modern leaders for civil rights equality. NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund Director-Counsel and President Sherrilyn Ifill was the school's commencement speaker on May 29th.
Ifill's presentation at her alma mater centered around the idea of passions and she encouraged students to pursue theirs. The outdoor ceremony on the Vassar campus was picturesque.
It was the college's 152nd commencement. There were 630 students conferred their degrees at the graduation.
Ifill is the seventh President and Director-Counsel of the NAACP IDF, but she has long been affiliated with the organization. She began with the group as an assistant council at their New York office, litigating the landmark Voting Rights Act case Houston Lawyers' Association vs. Attorney General of Texas.
Following graduation from New York University School of Law, Ifill was a fellow with the American Civil Liberties Union. In 1993, she started as a member of the faculty at the University of Maryland School of Law.
While at Maryland, Ifill continued to consult on civil rights matters and became regarded as a top strategist. She has also become a critically acclaimed writer.
