The 2016 Chautauqua Assembly in DeFuniak Springs, Florida got a blast from the past Friday morning. Star of the iconic television series "Leave it to Beaver", Jerry Mathers, was the keynote speaker for the weekend-long event.
Mathers talked to the hundreds of attendees assembled at Fort Walton High School about his life since the show ended and how America has changed. The entire weekend featured other exhibits, performances, and presentations.
Individual tickets for his speech cost $15 while four-day passes cost $150. Those who had passes to the entire assembly could also go backstage to get a photograph with Mathers.
Mathers became a pop culture icon during his six seasons and 234 episodes on Leave it to Beaver. He wisely became the first child actor to ever receive a merchandise revenue deal from the show, something he is still cashing in on today.
Leave it to Beaver has been shown in over 80 countries and 40 languages. Mathers originally began his acting career at age two and appeared in several movies before his run on the show.
Following Leave it to Beaver, Mathers has made several TV appearances and even reprised his character for several seasons with "Still the Beaver". Today, he is an advocate for diabetes awareness and promotes healthy living.
