Someone with the international experience that activist Nontombi Naomi Tutu possesses can provide valuable insight on the world around us. Tutu will present some of her thoughts on January 18th when she lectures at the University of Michigan-Flint on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
Tutu's speech highlights a day packed with activities on campus to honor Dr. King's legacy. She will speak from 4:00-5:30 p.m. in the Kiva which is located at the Harding Mott University Center.
Her presentation is free and open to the public. It is one of several taking place at colleges across the country on that significant day.
Tutu is the daughter of 1984 Nobel Peace Prize winner Archbishop Desmond Tutu. Like her father, she has been fighting for human rights for years and speaking at events much like the one at UM-Flint since the 1970s.
Tutu's early career work focused on consulting in Africa on issues of equality, educational opportunities, and economic development. She has been a teacher at the University of Hartford, University of Connecticut and Brevard College.
Tutu also went back to South Africa from 1997-99 to serve as a program coordinator at the University of Cape Town. Since leaving the Office of International Programs at Tennessee State University in 2006, Tutu has focused exclusively on public speaking.
