As a top historian, there are an array of important events that John Barry can speak about with authority. Next month, he will address a crowd on one of the greatest natural disasters to ever hit the United States.
Barry is the keynote speaker for a symposium commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Flood of 1916. The event will be held July 15-16 at Asheville-Buncombe Technical College in North Carolina.
The conference is free to the public and Barry will speak at 10 a.m. on the 16th. The Flood of 1916 devastated Western Carolina when two hurricanes crossed paths across the region.
Barry has studied the topic of great floods extensively. He is the author of the book, "Rising Tide: The Great Mississippi Flood of 1927 and How It Changed America", and served on a flood protection group following the disaster of Hurricane Katrina.
The New York Public Library designated Rising Tide as one of the 50 best books of the last 50 years in 2005. Several of Barry's other books have landed him on the New York Times bestsellers list.
In 2004, his book, "The Great Influenza: The story of the deadliest pandemic in history, a study of the 1918 pandemic" was named the year's outstanding book on sciences or medicine by The National Academies of Science. Barry currently serves as a Distinguished Scholar at Tulane and Xavier University's Center for Bioenvironmental Research.
