On Saturday, graduates at Nicholls State University got to hear from a professor associated with one of the country's premier institutions. Harvard's Kit Parker was the winter commencement speaker.
The ceremony honoring the Class of 2016 was held inside John L. Guidry Stadium. Parker discussed with the departing students about how important it is to follow one's passions.
Nicholls honored 600 graduates at the event. The ceremony was free and open to the public.
Parker is Harvard's Tarr Family Professor of Bioengineering and Applied Physics at the John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. In his role, he has conducted unorthodox research which ranges from using cuttlefish skin cells to create camoflage to making wound dressing from a cotton candy machine.
Parker also currently serves as a U.S. Army Reserve lieutenant colonel. He orginally enlisted as a paratrooper in 1992 and served two tours of duty in Afghanistan.
During that time, Parker was a part of a special inspection unit called the Gray Team as well. He has been awarded the Bronze Star, the Army Commendation Medal with V device and the Combat Infantryman's Badge.
