Acclaimed gospel singer Yolanda Adams got a unique opportunity last month. She spoke to graduates at her alma mater, Texas Southern University.
Adams was able to provide a message of inspiration as the winter commencement speaker. The event was held on December 16th.
Adams graduated with a bachelor's degree in journalism from TSU in 1984. After starting her professional career as an elementary school teacher, she went on to tremendous success in the music business.
Adams is a five-time Grammy Award winner. During her 29-year career, she has recorded 13 studio albums and gospel hits like Be Blessed, Open My Heart and Continuous Praise.
In 2001, Adams became the first artist to win an American Music Award in the contemporary/inspirational artist category. She has also received four Dove Awards from the Gospel Music Association, seven NAACP Image Awards and four BET Awards.
Adams has had great success as well as host of the nationally-syndicated radio program, The Yolanda Adams Morning Show. Billboard dubbed her the gospel artist of the decade in 2009.
