Freedom Writers Foundation Educator Erin Gruwell Speaks at Power of the Purse Next Week

Erin Gruwell has made an impact on countless lives in her role as an educator. Next Tuesday, she has another opportunity to impart some lessons as a guest speaker at a United Way fundraiser.
Gruwell will speak at the Power of the Purse luncheon to benefit the United Way of Olmsted County. The fundraiser will take place at the Rochester International Event Center.
Activities begin with the silent purse auction at 10:30 a.m. followed by a VIP reception with Gruwell. The lunch and her keynote will begin at noon.
Gruwell began her teaching career in 1994, educating low-performing youth in Long Beach, California. Her storytelling and motivational abilities led to the high school graduation of 150 Freedom Writers.
The book, "The Freedom Writers Diary: How a Teacher and 150 Teens Used Writing to Change Themselves and the World Around Them" shared the story of success when it was published in 1999. Gruwell's success also caught the attention of several major media outlets
In 2007, the Freedom Writers story was made into a feature film starring Hilary Swank. Gruwell started the Freedom Writers Foundation in 1997 that takes her method to underperforming communities everywhere.
