Forsyth Tech Names Regenerative Medicine Expert Anthony Atala Commencement Speaker

One of the more respected named in medicine will give the commencement speech at Forsyth Tech next week.  Dr. Anthony Atala is slated to speak to the Class of 2016 on May 12th.  

The ceremony will be at 5 p.m. at the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Winston-Salem.  1,300 Forsyth Tech students are receiving degrees. 

The graduation is open to the public for free.  As a trailblazer in the area of regenerative medicine, there is no doubt that Atala's story will inspire the graduates. 

Atala is the director of the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine.  While at Wake Forest, he has had several significant medical achievements.

In 2004, Atala led the team that placed the first lab-grown organ into a human.  He has also done extensive research in the area of amniotic stem cells. 

Discover Magazine named Atala's work the number one Top Science Story of the Year in the field of medicine in 2007.  He was elected to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences in 2011.
