Two icons of American politics and the state of Kansas made a joint appearance this past Saturday. Former U.S. Senators Bob Dole and Nancy Kassebaum spoke on the University of Kansas campus.
They were at the Robert J. Dole Institute of Politics. There were several hundred people gathered to hear the duo's thoughts on the current political scene.
For the majority of the conversation, they did stay away from the presidential race, but they addressed it at the end. The event also served as an opportunity for Kassebaum to receive the 2016 Dole Leadership prize.
Together, Dole and Kassebaum served in the Senate for 18 years before both leaving in 1996. Dole went on to gain the Republican Party's nomination for President that year.
After serving in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1961-1969, Dole embarked on his lengthy Senate career. He ran for Vice President on Gerald Ford's ticket in 1976 and entered the presidential race in 1980 and 1988.
Kassebaum was a pioneer for women in U.S. politics and served in the Senate from 1978-1996. She was the first woman to be elected to a full Senate term without her husband previously serving in Congress.
Kassebaum was well-known for health care reform and her outspoken takes on foreign policy. She currently serves as an Advisory Board member for Partnership for a Secure America.
