This week, the University of Southern Maine added a great deal of credibility to May's commencement ceremony.  They announced former U.S. Senator George Mitchell as a speaker at the event on Tuesday.

Mitchell's address to the Class of 2016 will come at 9 a.m. on May 14th.  The graduation proceedings will be held at the Cross Insurance Arena.

Graduates from the Gorham, Portland, and Lewiston-Auburn campuses will have their degrees conferred.  Mitchell will certainly be able to provide some impactful insights from a life lived in the public spotlight.

Mitchell was a Senator from Maine from 1980 to 1995.  During his final six years in office, he served as Senate majority leader, working on several bills, most notably the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Immediately following his departure from Congress, Mitchell served as the Independent Chairman of Northern Ireland Peace Talks.  In 2009, he reprised his role as a diplomat as a special envoy for Middle East Peace.

Mitchell also led a very high-profile probe into performance-enhancing drug use in Major League Baseball in 2006 and 2007.  He has made forays into the business sector as well, serving as chairman of The Walt Disney Company from 2004-2007.
