As a builder of one of the most influential African-American lifestyle magazines, it makes sense that Susan Taylor would be pegged to speak at one of several Martin Luther King Day events across the country. Taylor will be the keynote speaker in Columbus, Ohio at the 31st annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Breakfast on January 18th.
The breakfast is being held at the Greater Columbus Convention Center in Exhibition Hall C from 7-10 a.m. Thousands will attend the sold-out event that cost $40 person.
The Martin Luther King Breakfast Committee bills their event as the largest of its kind in the U.S. Speaking engagements like this are just one of the ways that Taylor is still able to reach out and make a difference.
After leading Essence Magazine as chief editor for 27 years, Taylor left her post to begin a new journey. She started The National CARES Mentoring Movement that works to destroy a trend of intergenerational poverty among African Americans.
Taylor still serves as Editor Emerita at Essence. She first joined the company as freelance fashion and beauty editor in 1970 and rose to the editor-in-chief role by 1981.
In her heyday, Taylor was widely considered the most influential African-American woman in journalism. She has received the Henry Johnson Fisher Award from The Magazine Publishers of America, the President's Award from the NAACP, and is a member of the American Society of Magazine Editors' Hall of Fame.
