This past Friday, the graduates at Bowdoin College got to hear from one of the leaders in the automotive industry. Ford Foundation president Darren Walker gave the keynote address at the school's Baccalaureate ceremony.
Bowdoin's 211th commencement was held the following day. Walker's keynote was titled, "From Gratitude to Justice".
He spoke a great deal about Bowdoin's most famous alumni, the poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Walker also urged the students to remember all the people who have helped them achieve their successes.
As president of the Ford Foundation, Walker heads the nation's second-largest philanthropic organizations. He joined the organization in 2013, but he has been a leader in the non-profit sector for two decades.
Before starting with Ford, Walker was the vice president of the Rockefeller Foundation. During the 1990's, he was the COO of the Abyssinian Development Corporation, Harlem's largest community development group.
Walker is a trustee of Arcus Foundation, Carnegie Hall, the High Line and the New York City Ballet. This year, he was named to Time's list of the "100 Most Influential People in the World".
