Last week, the Southeast Missouri State University started their annual Speaker Series. One of the more impressive speakers on the list for later in the school year is civil rights leader Mary Berry.
On January 18th, Berry will keynote their annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Dinner. It will be held at 6 p.m. at the Show Me Center and tickets will go on sale November 28th.
Berry is the second to last speaker in the series. Former Olympic gold medalist Shawn Johnson will close things out on February 6th.
Berry is a civil rights expert and has been a respected voice behind the movement for over 40 years. She served as chairperson of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights during four presidential administrations.
Currently, Berry is the Geraldine R. Segal Professor of American Social Thought and Professor of History at the University of Pennsylvania. She was previously the first woman in charge of a major research university as chancellor at the University of Colorado.
Berry is also a student of the past and is a former president of the Organization of American Historians. She has written several books spanning topics as diverse as civil rights history and parenthood.
