Civil Rights activist Myrlie Evers-Williams is speaking at a special event in Lansing, Michigan. She will keynote the 32nd Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday luncheon.
The luncheon takes place January 18th at the Lansing Center. The theme of the event is a legendary line from Dr. King, "We must learn to live together as brothers or perish together as fools."
In addition to Evers-Williams presentation, $25,000 in prizes will be handed out to essay contest winners. The Rev Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Legacy of Service Award will also be given.
From 1995-1998, Evers-Williams was the first female chair of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. She started her life in activism with her husband Medger Evers, the NAACP's first field secretary in Mississippi.
The couple organized demonstrations and voter registration drives. Medger Evers was assassinated in 1963, but his wife contiued the couple's work.
Evers-Williams was the first black woman to be appointed to the Board of Public Works in Los Angeles. She worked to promote education and economic development through the Medger Evers Institute.
