Roberta Bondar became an icon among all Canadians, but years later she is still giving back to her country. Bondar is working with the Heart and Stroke Foundation for their Heart Month canvassing campaign next month.
Over 100,000 Canadians will do the same and last year, nearly $10 million was raised across the country during Heart Month. Bondar is this year's honorary chair and being associated with her name alone should do great work for the cause.
The campaign will begin in the communities of Sudbury and North Bay. Bondar is looking forward to getting out and raising awareness about the dangers of strokes.
Bondar became Canada;s first female astronaut aboard the Shuttle Discovery in 1992. She holds the unique distinction of also being the first neurologist in space.
After her successful trip in 1992, Bondar served as NASA's head of space medicine for the next decade. In 2011, Bondar was awarded the NASA Space Medal.
In addition to her successful aerospace career, Bondar is an excellent photographer who has compiled four photo essay books. She is a member of the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame and also has a star on the Canadian Walk of Fame.
