Domestic Abuse Intervention Services heard from a top documentary filmmaker at their recent event. Jennifer Siebel Newsom was the keynote speaker at the Celebrate Independence Luncheon on Tuesday.
The luncheon stands to raise awareness about domestic abuse while also celebrating survivors. It was held at Monoca Terrace in Madison, Wisconsin.
Siebel Newsom discussed the importance of creating an environment that allows boys and men find a healthier form of masculinity than abuse. In addition, DAIS hosted a screening of her latest documentary later that evening at Sundance Cinemas in Madison.
Through her films, Siebel Newsom explores important issues. Her first documentary, "Miss Representation", debuted at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival and deals with the underrepresentation of women in power positions.
Miss Representation drew positive reviews and won the Audience Award at the Palo Alto International Film Festival. Siebel Newsom's second film, "The Mask You Live In" also premiered at Sundance last year.
In addition to her documentaries, Siebel Newsom is also the co-founder, President and CEO of The Representation Project. The organization actively works to end gender stereotypes.
