The Detroit Repertory Theatre held a special fundraising gala on Saturday with respected actress S. Epatha Merkerson. While they host the event every year, this one honoring their 60th anniversary was special.
Merkerson talked about the importance of fostering the arts and keeping the culture alive. There was also a special play performance during the evening.
The continued success of the theater is helped in part by UAW-Ford. They have donated $20,000 and helped them with their anniversary event.
Merkerson is best known for her role in NBC's long-running drama series, "Law & Order." She played NYPC Lieutenant Anita Van Buren in a show-record 391 episodes from 1993-2010.
Currently, Merkerson stars as Hospital Chief Sharon Goodwin in NBC's "Chicago Med." Her career began as a recurring character in the late 1980s in "Pee-wee's Playhouse."
In addition to television and film work, Merkerson has been a host on TV One for "Find Our Missing." She is the recipient of a Golden Globe, Emmy, Screen Actors Guild Award and four NAACP Image Awards.
