Lynn Whitfield has become a respected actress over her distinguished career. She will share stories about that journey and some tips for success with Class of 2016 graduates at Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
Whitfield is this year's commencement speaker for the school. The graduation ceremony will be held on May 7th at 3 p.m. at the Pine Bluff Convention Center Arena.
The event is free and open to the public. As a native of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Whitfield will be able to relate to students who also mostly hail from southern backgrounds.
While Whitfield appeared in television and film throughout the 1980's, it was her performance in 1991's "The Josephine Baker Story" that first gained her acclaim. The HBO film earned her a Golden Glove nomination and Primetime Emmy Award for Oustanding Lead Actress in a Miniseries or Movie.
That appearance in The Josephine Baker Story led to several other successful roles for Whitfield in made-for-TV movies. Her five NAACP Image Awards have recognized her performances in many of those films.
Whitfield originally got her acting chops on the stage, joining the Negro Ensemble Company in New York. She received a BFA in theater from Howard University.
