Actor Wendell Pierce Named Commencement Speaker at Rutgers-Newark

Wendell Pierce has had many memorable acting roles.  He is hoping his next speaking engagement leaves a similar impact.

Pierce is set to be the spring commencement speaker at the Rutgers University-Newark.  The ceremony will be held May 18th a 9 a.m. at the Prudential Center.

In addition to addressing the Class of 2016, Pierce will also be awarded an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree.  There was actually a course last year at Rutgers-Newark based on "The Wire", an HBO series that he starred in. 

Pierce played significant series roles in The Wire and also HBO's "Treme".  He currently stars in CBS' "The Odd Couple".

Recently, Pierce has also had recurring roles in the hit dramas "Suits" and "Ray Donovan".  In addition to his notable TV work, he has had a robust career in film and on stage.

Since 2009, Pierce has been the host of the award-winning radio program "Jazz at Lincoln Center".  The New Orleans native has written a memoir about his experiences after Hurricane Katrina called "The Wind in the Reeds".
