Actor LeVar Burton Named Keynote Speaker for Oakland University's Keeper of the Dream Awards

Actor LeVar Burton gets to reward and speak to a very special group of students next week.  Burton is the keynote speaker at the 24th annual Oakland University's Keeper of the Dream Awards Celebration.  

The event honors students who promote diversity, cultural understanding, and community activism.  It takes place Monday, January 18th from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Oakland Center Banquet Rooms.  

Winners will be awarded up to a $5,000 scholarship.  Keeper of the Dream kicks off a month-long schedule of events for African American Celebration Month.

Burton is most famously known for his role at Kunta Kinte in the groundbreaking 1977 ABC television miniseries Roots.  He has gone on to a distinguished career in TV and film and has won 12 Daytime Emmys for his role as the host of the PBS children's series, Reading Rainbow.

Burton is also recognized for his role Lt. Commander Geordi La Forge in Star Trek: The Next Generation.  He has directed several episodes of shows in the Star Trek franchise and other TV programs as well.

In 1990, Burton received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.  He is currently on the Board of Directors for the AIDS Research Alliance.
