One of the top African-American actors in Hollywood is scheduled to speak this week at one of the top historically black colleges and universities in the U.S. Derek Luke is the Tuskegee University summer commencement speaker.
On Friday, Luke will address the Class of 2016 at 10 a.m. in the chapel on campus. The university released a statement trumpeting his trailblazing efforts in the filmmaking business as a reason to bring him to campus.
Tuskegee University is no stranger to high-profile commencement speakers. Entertainment mogul Tyler Perry spoke to graduates in the spring of 2015 and First Lady Michelle Obama was this past spring's speaker.
Luke broke onto the screen when he played Antwone Fisher in the 2002 film of the same name. That performance won him several accolades, including the Independent Spirit Award for Best Male Lead.
Luke has starred in other notable films like, "Friday Night Lights", "Madea Goes to Jail" and "Captain America: The First Avenger". He has won two Black Reel Awards and been nominated for three others in his career.
Luke was recently featured in the television remake of "Roots" as Kunta Kinte's uncle, Silla Ba Dibba. He is also a series regular on the Audience Network show, "Rogue".
