Angela Davis has devoted her life to activism. This January, Davis will have another important platform to speak from.
She has been named the keynote speaker at the Martin Luther King Jr. celebration in Fox Valley, Illinois. The event takes place January 18th at 6:30 p.m. at Lawrence Memorial Chapel.
The theme of the evening and Davis’ message is “Breaking the Chains of Injustice”. Two Jane LaChapelle McCarty-MLK Awards will be presented as well and attending the celebration is free.
Davis rose to notoriety in the 1960s as an activist and in 1970 when she was on the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted List. She was imprisoned for 18 months before being acquitted of being involved in a courthouse incident where a judge and three other men were killed.
In the years since, Davis has fought for a radical overhaul of the prison system. She is a distinguished professor emerita of history of consciousness and feminist studies at the University of California-Santa Cruz.
Her activism roots date to her time as a member of the Community Party USA during the height of the Civil Rights Movement. Davis was twice a vice presidential nominee on the party’s ticket in the 1980s.
