The 2018 Books Along the Teche Literary Festival is hotly anticipated because of one standout attendee. Accomplished author Ernest Gaines will speak.

The event takes place April 6-8 in the historic district of Iberia Parish, Louisiana. The festival is supported by the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities.

Gaines is this year's Great Southern Writer and featured speaker. The event was originally established in 2016 to honor the literary legacy of Detective Dave Robicheaux.

Gaines wrote his first novel at the age of 17. He received a National Book Critics Circle Award in 1993 for A Lesson Before Dying

Four of Gaines' books have been adapted for film. He is a former MacArthur Fellow and served as a writer-in-residence at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.

In 2000, Gaines received a National Humanities Medal, Louisiana Writer Award and Governor's Arts Award. He was awarded the National Arts Medal in 2013.
