Cal Poly was able to bring in one of the most well-respected journalists in recent memory to speak at a celebration for their student media. Ben Bradlee Jr. was the keynote presenter for the closing gala of their "100 Years of Delivering the News" event.
Bradlee delivered the message that investigative reporting is more important than ever. He discussed the challenges that smaller local papers have in supporting those who want to pursue in-depth stories.
In addition to Bradlee's speech, the inaugural class of the Mustang Media Hall of Fame was inducted at The Spotlight Gala. One of the four enshrined was cult music parody phenomenon "Weird Al" Yankovic.
Bradlee is best known for his 25 years at the Boston Globe. He began as a reporter at the paper and rose to the title of deputy managing editor.
Bradlee notably oversaw the Globe's coverage of the Catholic Church sexual abuse scandal. The paper won a Pulitzer Prize for Public Service for their work.
In 2013, Bradlee wrote the New York Times bestseller, "The Kid: The Immortal Life of Ted Williams". He is also the author of two other books.
